In 1904, Louis Cartier designed a wristwatch for his friend Alberto Santos-Dumont, a Brazilian aviator who found it inconvenient to continually check his pocket watch while piloting his plane. In the early 1900’s, a wristwatch was considered to be an item that a woman would wear as jewelry. Flouting this trend and starting a new one in the process, Cartier mounted a watch onto a plain leather strap with a small buckle, creating an elegant and extremely functional man’s wristwatch. Quality, fine craftsmanship and high style have long been the hallmarks of the House of Cartier.
